Well, I've put off posting here since about 8:30 this morning, mainly because I don't want anyone to think that I'm lying. But, I need to gain some understanding of what the heck's going on.

This is in regards to the 1989 Chevy PU described above. I read somewhere in W4G that if you unplug the neg. cable from the battery, the computer will reset itself, so that's what I told my friend to do. In the meanwhile, I wrapped the oxygen sensor with aluminum foil. He left the battery disconnected for 8 hours then hooked it back up. Then, the truck wasn't driven for the past week as he used his Saturn (with a dual pack) to drive back and forth to work. Incidently, his mileage on the Saturn was 29 mpg. Over the past week, with the dual pack, he averaged 52.5 mpg.

This morning, I spoke with him and asked him to take the truck out on a test run, to see if the computer was still on rich, or if it had reset itself. I told him to make sure that it was full on gas, so that we could check the mileage. I know that "they" say, "don't top off", but to make sure that all things are equal, he fills until he can see the gas at the little "flapper" in the filler pipe.

Anyway, he called me about an hour later with his voice kind of choked up and told me that he had driven 46.3 miles, then filled up again.

Here's what has me "bogged down". It took .717 gallons to refill to the same point in the filler pipe.

It doesn't take a mathametician to figure that that comes to:

64.574616 Miles Per Gallon. Now, divide that by the baseline mileage, (15.02 mpg), and you get: 4.30 times (rounded off) more distance on a gallon of gas. Is this insane enough for you??

Has anyone else had anything like this happen, or have I stumbled onto something that the auto/oil barons wouldn't want us to know.??

I think I really need to know how this happened!!

How much baking soda are you using in each cell, and how much gas are you producing? I have seen no mileage increase, but I am only using 3/4 teaspoon. I get about 1 bubble every 2-3 seconds if I put the output tube in water

I'm using 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in each cell. Each cell is a separate unit. I have 3 hoses going into a manifold of my own design, with one hose leaving the manifold to the pvc vacuum line.

I have no way to measure how much hydrogen I'm producing though I can tell by the bubbles that I am producing it.

Thanks for the info. I just installed another unit in my car and am running 5 teaspoons per cell. I am getting a lot more H.H.O. and the units run a lot cooler. I'm hoping I can get results even close to yours.

Hi,

Congrats.  Brings a tear to my eye not to mention getting choked up.  I can understand the pickup since it's a carb set-up but the Saturn???  I'm assuming it is a later vintage and therefore has at least one O2 sensor and all the other sensors that come with it.  Did you get around all of the electronics to bypass the MAP/MAF/OBD or is it without all this stuff?  I'm asking because one of my vehicles is a '92 accord and I'm assuming it has the same level of electonic requirements.

Anyway, congrats again.  I may try my motorhome this weekend if my plastic lids arrive and look forward to doing whatever it takes to reduce the fuel costs in that monster.

Cheers,
Willy

Just say that I have the "Midas Touch".

The only thing I did to either vehicle was: I wrapped the oxy sensors with aluminum foil, held on with small gauge wire.

This is why I want someone totally separate from me to test out one of my hydro-manifolds. Perhaps this had something to do with it??

Let me know how you do on your motorhome as I have a 28 ft. Establishment, made by Ford. I'll be rigging it up in a couple of weeks.

Will do.  I still haven't received my plastic lids but if not here by tomorrow night, I'll insulate the metal ones and try the motorhome.  If it works, I may pull an all nighter to get my daughter's Honda rigged.  As for the O2 sensors wrapped in tinfoil.  I don't get it.     Does it protect against excessive egt (exhaust gas temps) and therefore not trip the computer that the engine is too lean?

Since I'm a newbie to the forum and the whole concept of HH, is there a string on the forum that you would recommend so that I can find out more about the science behind the aluminium wrap on the O2 sensors?  I've seen some literature on "Wideband" Vs "Narrowband" and understand it to be that the "Wideband" O2 sensor would be more tolerant of temps therefore would be less likely to demand more fuel....sound about right?

Anyway, appreciate your help.  Testing the motorhome on the weekend will depend on several things including a consistent head wind/tail wind.  So that I don't go broke, I'm going to carefully rig a container with 4 litres (about a gallon) to the fuel pump inlet line and calculate with and without the set up.  I figure this will give me some idea Vs filling and draining a tank that would cost me about $200.00 I estimate....and it has 2 tanks.

Stay "tuned"

ps. if you think I should be in a different area in the forum, let me know

Cheers,
Willy

Actually, from my experience, by wrapping it, you effectivly take it out of the loop. Then, if you don't show any improvement in mpg, take the negative cable off of the battery for a couple of hours, to give the computer time to reset itself. Then put the cable back on and continue your tests. You should see an improvment then.

As for the correct place for your questions, I think we should be in:

There would probably be others there to help with your questions. Also, feel free to pm me at any time. I'll answer as quickly as I can. And, above all, remember, most of us ARE Newbies here also. It's just a matter of sharing our experiences so that all of us benifit.

I did some experimenting today. I put the output hose in water as you have suggested and found that I get about 5 to 6 bubbles per second. That's with one cell. Frankly, this leads me to believe that you might have a leak, or some type of obstruction. Perhaps both.

Of course, since I haven't seen your system, I am only guessing.
